Different collections define the Louvre:
- Oriental Antiquities: The Department of Oriental Antiquities preserves the objects from a region between India and the present Mediterranean Sea.
- The Arts of Islam: This department, created in August 2003, brings together the collections from an area situated between Spain and India and dating of the origins of Islamic civilization (622) until the nineteenth century. The museum will soon double the museum space granted to the arts of Islam to present at least 3,000 works.
- Egyptian Antiquities: The Department of Egyptian Antiquities was established on 15 May 1826 by royal decree of Charles X. Currently, at the Louvre, Egyptian Antiquities are spread over three floors: on the mezzanine, the Roman Egypt and Coptic Egypt; the ground floor and first floor, Pharaonic Egypt.
- Antiquities Greek, Etruscan and Roman: The department is spread over three floors: the Preclassic entresol Greece; the ground floor the classical and Hellenistic Greece, and the Etruscan and Roman antiquities in the first floor, which is access by the stairs where Daru throne Victory of Samothrace, Greek ceramics, figurines in terracotta, bronze and precious objects.
- Sculptures: Among the recent changes, we can see the grouping of all the statues created for the park of Marly, in particular the large equestrian statues.
- Works of art: One of the richest departments of the museum, constantly enlarged by donations and purchases. There are jewelry, figurines and ornaments, but also furniture and tapestries. The objects cover a period from the early Middle Ages to the mid-nineteenth century.
- Paints: The Department of Paintings now has about 6,000 paintings covering a period from the Middle Ages until 1848. With few exceptions, the later works have been transferred to the Orsay Museum at its inception (1986).
- Graphic Arts: The Graphic Arts Department is stocked with over 130 000 pieces. It combines three different funds: The Cabinet of drawings, the collection and Chalcography Edmond de Rothschild.
